Unveiling the Charms of the Bedlington Terrier: A Quirky and Remarkable Companion

Introduction

When it comes to choosing a furry companion, dog enthusiasts have many breeds to choose from. Among the substantial breeds, the Bedlington Terrier stands out as a truly unique and captivating choice. These dogs are rather uncommon to find. With its distinctive appearance, charming personality, and surprising abilities, the Bedlington Terrier has warmed the hearts of dog lovers worldwide. Now I will share the interesting qualities and quirks that make the Bedlington Terrier a breed like no other.

1. Whimsical Appearance

At first glance, the Bedlington Terrier may remind you of a lamb with its fluffy coat and it has a distinctive ‘mohawk’. The breed's graceful (you should see them walk, very light-footed and flexible back), arched body and pear-shaped head give it an elegant and almost regal presence. With its curly coat that comes in various shades, including blue (gray), liver (white), and sandy (taupe), this breed's appearance is not easily forgotten. You often see this breed in the national dog shows on television.

2. Gentle, Yet Playful Nature

Beneath its delightful exterior lies a heart of gold. Bedlington Terriers are known for their gentle and affectionate nature, making them wonderful pets for families, singles, and seniors alike. Their affectionate disposition is particularly endearing, as they often form strong bonds with their owners and enjoy spending quality time together. My Gracie follows me around all the time even running into the next room to grab something.

3. Canine Athletes

Don't be fooled by their elegant appearance; Bedlington Terriers are true athletes at heart. Bred as working dogs originally used for hunting and racing, they retain a remarkable level of agility and speed. This breed's athleticism makes them fantastic candidates for dog sports like agility, obedience, and even racing. Providing them with regular exercise and mental stimulation is essential to keep their active minds and bodies happy.

4. A Quirky Sense of Humor

Bedlington Terriers are known to possess a quirky sense of humor that can brighten up any room. They have a knack for amusing antics that often leave their owners in stitches (so true!). Their playful and mischievous behavior, coupled with their inherent intelligence, allows them to come up with creative ways to entertain themselves and those around them. Gracie has this 3D blue bone that she energetically fumbles it along in a playful manner and then pounces on it!

5. Their Curly Coats

The Bedlington Terrier's unique coat requires a bit of attention to keep it looking its best. Regular grooming (read - brushing) is essential to prevent matting and to maintain the coat's texture. You can see how curly they really are especially when they get wet (we affectionately call her a drowned rat).  Additionally, regular baths and brushing will help keep their curly coats healthy and vibrant.

6. Strong Prey Drive

It's important to note that Bedlington Terriers possess a strong prey drive due to their history as vermin hunters. They love to chase after squirrels and birds. Early socialization and training can help manage this natural instinct and promote harmonious coexistence with other animals. She likes to keep her nose to the ground on walks and once she picks up a scent, she really zones in to focus on it. Let’s go!

7. Health Considerations

Like all breeds, Bedlington Terriers have some health considerations to be aware of. One notable concern is copper toxicosis, a genetic condition that affects the liver's ability to process copper. Regular veterinary check-ups, a balanced diet, and responsible breeding practices can help mitigate potential health issues. We purchase our dogs from a reputable breeder, who can be few and far between, and who makes sure that there are no issues with her dogs.

Conclusion

The Bedlington Terrier is truly a breed full of surprises. From its lamb-like appearance to its playful personality and athletic abilities, this charming dog offers a unique blend of qualities. If you're ready for a loyal, affectionate, and entertaining furry friend, the Bedlington Terrier might just be the perfect addition to your life. Just remember, while they may look like lambs, these dogs have a spirit as lively as any other terrier! Seriously!
